The Town of New Glasgow has received high ratings in both the Communities in Boom ranking by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business as well as the internationally renown Communities in Bloom program.

New Glasgow was ranked first in Nova Scotia, 4th in Atlantic Canada and 22nd in Canada in the Canadian Federation of Independent Business Entrepreneurial cities list of communities that have the entrepreneurial edge. The ranking was based on such things as high concentration of entrepreneurs and a high business start up numbers. The 12 index components were divided into the categories of Presence, Perspective and Policy and include: net business start ups, business per capita, self employment intensity, industry employment diversity, future business performance, future full time hiring expectations, overall state of business, cost of local government, local government sensitivity to local business, local government regulation, local government tax balance and Bizpal.

The Town of New Glasgow was also the national winner in the population category of 7,501 to 10,000 for the national Communities in Bloom-- winning for accomplishments in greening, environmental stewardship, beautification, heritage, urban forestry and more. The Town also won the prestigious Community of Gardeners in 2010 across all population categories nd a provincial sustainable tourism award in the fall of 2011.
