Mervin Smith, Supervisor The Town of New Glasgow Water Utility draws its water from Forbes Lake, a pristine water source located in Churchville, Pictou County. The Utility began supplying customers from this source in 1912. The Utility maintains this watershed area under our Watershed Management Plan approved by the Province of Nova Scotia. The watershed is approximately fourteen hundred hectares, of which seven hundred is surface water supply and seven hundred is ground water supply. The Utility has a strong partnership with the landowners around Forbes Lake, who contribute greatly to the maintenance of this environment. In September of 2000, the Town of New Glasgow Water Utility commissioned a three million gallon per day to dissolved air flotation Water Treatment Plant at Forbes Lake. This plant provides drinking water to approximately six thousand customers within the Town of New Glasgow, Westville, sections of the Municipality of Pictou County and industrial users in Trenton. This plant is staffed by three operators and a supervisor, each of whom take great pride in processing Forbes Lake water and producing water of the highest quality, which exceeds Canadian Drinking Guidelines. The Utility is proud of our operators who continue to advance the quality of water produced at our plant. In addition to duties at our Water Treatment Plant our operators are also responsible for ensuring that the highest quality of water is maintained at the extremities of our distribution system. Our Utility has taken this challenge seriously and successfully produced water at our extremities, which again meets Canadian Drinking Guidelines and means that the water distributed at the ends of the water line for New Glasgow is the same high quality as that from the Treatment Plant. It is this quality control monitoring that ensures that treated water is in full compliance with all regulatory requirements. Should customers have any enquiries about the quality of our water they may contact the Town Engineering Department or email the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor, Mervin Smith at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
