Her Honour the Honourable Mayann E. Francis, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia is pictured with Wanda Robson, youngest sister of Viola Desmond, during a special tribute to Viola  Irene (Davis) Desmond  hosted by the Town of New Glasgow during the 2010 Black Gala Homecoming. The portrait was commissioned jointly by the Town and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor and will be permanently displayed in Government House. It was created by local artist David MacIntosh, who was born and raised in New Glasgow and  is a resident of Pictou.

His Worship New Glasgow Mayor Barrie E. MacMillan is shown with Her Honour the Honourable Mayann E. Francis, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia  during a series of tributes paid to the late Viola Desmond by the Town of New Glasgow during the 2010 Black Gala Homecoming. Mrs. Desmond was racially discriminated against on November 8, 1946 for refusing to sit in the "whites only" section of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow. Her Honour and His Worship the Mayor are pictured with a framed copy of the Free Pardon and Apology  granted by the Province of Nova Scotia to Mrs. Desmond which officially documents her innocence. On the advice of the Executive Council, the lieutenant governor exercised the Royal Prerogative of Mercy to grant a Free Pardon. A free pardon is based on innocence and recognizes that a conviction was in error. A free pardon is an extraordinary remedy and is considered only in the rarest of circumstances. This is the first time a free pardon has been posthumously granted in Canada. The copy of the free pardon will be displayed in the New Glasgow Town Hall. A series of tributes to Viola Desmond took place on August 16 and other dignitaries in attendance included Premier Darrell Dexter, Minister of National Defense Peter MacKay and Nova Scotia Minister of Justice Ross Landry.

2010 SOBEYS SLAM A WORLD CURLING

TOUR GRAND SLAM EVENT

Dates Announced – 2010 Sobeys Slam A World Curling Tour Grand Slam Event

For immediate release

New Glasgow, NS - The 2010 Sobeys Slam will take place from November 10-14 at the John Brother MacDonald Stadium in New Glasgow, NS. Hosted by the Bluenose Curling Club, this award winning, 32 team event will have preliminary rounds played at both the curling club and the John Brother MacDonald Stadium. Teams will compete for a total prize purse of $60,000, which is the highest purse being offered in women’s curling events. Part of the World Curling Tour’s Grand Slam series, The Sobeys Slam is one of only three women’s stops on the tour, joining curling hotbeds Calgary and Winnipeg as host cities. Through its partnership with the Town of New Glasgow, the Sobeys Slam is also the only women’s event on the tour to take place in an arena.

“The Sobeys Slam will build on the momentum and the success of our Canadian curling teams at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. They brought curling to new heights in Canada and this event is a continuation of those celebrations. Sobeys is proud to once again be title sponsor of this premier event,” said Cindy Stevens, Vice President of Marketing, Sobeys Atlantic.

This year’s Sobeys Slam will have a new date, three weeks earlier in the past, but committee chairman, Jim Nix, sees this as a big positive and a real opportunity. “We are very excited about the earlier date. In addition to once again attracting all of Canada’s top teams, this date actually affords us a very real possibility of attracting a number of European teams as well. In the past, our event has conflicted with the start of the European Championships, but with the new dates, it is quite possible that we will have significant interest from abroad.”

While entries for this year’s Slam are only going out now, Nix sees no issue with attracting a top field, “Absolutely not an issue. Although we have not taken entries as yet, we have had teams from across the country emailing us for the past month looking for information on this year’s event.” The first 24 spots in the 32 team field will be determined by a teams standing in the CTRS ranking system managed by the Canadian Curling Association while the final eight spots are determined by the host committee. The committee is currently working on this list and will announce the selection criteria for these spots in the next few weeks.
