PCHA to immunize high school students
New Glasgow, NS – High school students in Pictou County will be able to get their H1N1 shot at school-based clinics beginning today, December 1.

“This age group is under represented at our public clinics so we are taking our H1N1 immunization clinics to the high schools this month,” said Janice Kaffer, vice president of clinical services for the Pictou County Health Authority.

Staff from Public Health Services will be immunizing students during school hours at Northumberland Regional High School on December 1 and 2, at Pictou Academy on December 3, and at North Nova Education Centre on December 8 and 9.   Public clinics will be held at the schools on these dates from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

“The easiest way to prevent H1N1 is to get immunized.  The H1N1 vaccine is safe and effective,” says Kaffer.

Since October 28 more than 18,400 people have been immunized in Pictou County, representing 40% of the population.   Public Health Services has held 34 public clinics, and averaged 100 immunizations an hour with one eight-hour clinic immunizing 1084 individuals.

With vaccine supplies increasing, other health professionals and organizations are also playing a vital role in delivering the vaccine.  Sixteen family doctors in Pictou County have received vaccine and vaccine is also being distributed to local long term care facilities and organizations like VON.

Immunization clinics are also being held December 3 at the River John Legion from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; December 7 at the Pictou County YMCA in New Glasgow from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; December 10 at the Trenton United Church Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; December 15 at the Thorburn Union Presbyterian Church Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and December 17 at the Museum of Industry in Stellarton from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

People are reminded to bring their health card.  There is no charge for the H1N1 vaccine.  Do not come to the clinic if you are sick or have flu symptoms.  Children 12 years of age and under must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian or the accompanying adult must have written permission for the child’s immunization from that parent/legal guardian.
