Her Honour the Honourable Mayann E. Francis, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia is pictured with Wanda Robson, youngest sister of Viola Desmond,during a special tribute to Viola  Irene (Davis) Desmond  hosted by the Town of New Glasgow during the 2010 Black Gala Homecoming. The portrait was commissioned jointly by the Town and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor and will be permanently displayed in Government House. It was created by local artist David MacIntosh, who was born and raised in New Glasgow and  is a resident of Pictou.

 

His Worship New Glasgow Mayor Barrie E. MacMillan is shown with Her Honour the Honourable Mayann E. Francis, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia  during a series of tributes paid to the late Viola Desmond by the Town of New Glasgow during the 2010 Black Gala Homecoming. Mrs. Desmond was racially discriminated against on November 8, 1946 for refusing to sit in the "whites only" section of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow. Her Honour and His Worship the Mayor are pictured with a framed copy of the Free Pardon and Apology  granted by the Province of Nova Scotia to Mrs. Desmond which officially documents her innocence.On the advice of the Executive Council, the lieutenant governor exercised the Royal Prerogative of Mercy to grant a Free Pardon. A free pardon is based on innocence and recognizes that a conviction was in error. A free pardon is an extraordinary remedy and is considered only in the rarest of circumstances. This is the first time a free pardon has been posthumously granted in Canada. The copy of the free pardon will be displayed in the New Glasgow Town Hall. A series of tributes to Viola Desmond took place on August 16 and other dignitaries in attendance included Premier Darrell Dexter, Minister of National Defense Peter MacKay and Nova Scotia Minister of Justice Ross Landry.
