New Glasgow along with the towns of Stellarton, Westville, Trenton and Pictou make up Nova Scotia's fourth largest urban area. The population of New Glasgow is 9,432, with a population density of 950.2/km2 in an area of 9.93km2 the (2001 Census).

Earnings/Incomes

The average earnings of full-time year-round employees are $43,901.( $53,270 for males;$30,1119 for females) This is higher than the provincial average full time earnings which is is $37,874 ($43,166 for males;$30,601 for females). The average earnings of all workers are $31,110.


Housing

The average value of dwellings is $87,188.  Provincial average value of dwellings is $101,515.

Average gross monthly payment for rented dwellings is $524.

The top occupations for males are retail managers (6.24%), machinists (4.16%) and insurance/real estate (3.46%). The top occupations for females are cashiers (7.9%), teachers/counsellors (6.67%) and nursing (5.68%). A new trend is emerging with the location of Convergys, which provides technical support for Microsoft clients and ICT an information technology call centre. Together these businesses employ 450 professionals and 150 call centre staff.

Age
The median age of New Glasgwegians is 42.0 with the highest percentage of the population falling into the 25-44 age category ( 25.5% of the population). The second highest population category is the 45-54 age category, followed closely by the 5-14 age range.

The percentage of visible minority population is 5.31%.
