Mayor Barrie MacMillan Welcomes You Barrie_MacMillan--10ReCr

As Mayor of New Glasgow, I am pleased to welcome you to our Town's website. It is our sincere hope that this site will provide useful information for our citizens and business community and will also be an incentive for visitors to come in person and visit New Glasgow on Nova Scotia's beautiful Northumberland Shore.

New Glasgow is a beautiful riverside town with an appealing lifestyle and many charming vacation amenities. Our people have a generosity of spirit, a commitment to excellence and a vision that enriches the community, the region and quite often the nation and even the world.

The Town is the commercial service centre of Pictou County and north-eastern Nova Scotia and is home to several major employers, including a vibrant retail and service sector, quality educational facilities, a regional hospital, a performing arts theatre, stadium, a full service marina, year round recreational opportunities, a groomed trail system, a wide variety of accommodations and attractions as well as a multicultural environment.

Our Town is strategically located for both business and pleasure with excellent transportation routes and infrastructure. We are located only 90 minutes from the Halifax International Airport and just under two hours from Nova Scotia’s capital city of Halifax. We are only 20 minutes from the Northumberland Ferries Limited terminal, where two ferries run several times daily between eastern Prince Edward Island and Caribou, Nova Scotia from May to December. We are a two- and-a-half hour drive to Cape Breton Island or Moncton, New Brunswick.

New Glasgow was settled 1784, named after Glasgow, Scotland in 1809 and officially incorporated in 1875. The Town is enriched by heritages that include Scottish, African-Canadian, British, Irish, Greek, French, Dutch, Asian and many others. One needs look no farther than the New Glasgow Town Council to see the wonderful cultural diversity of our community. No two of our seven Council members have the same ancestral roots and their family trees include such heritages as Scottish, Sri Lankan, British, Irish, African-Canadian, Ukrainian and Italian.

The Town has a detailed strategic plan dedicated to the vision of New Glasgow as the leading commercial service centre for northeastern Nova Scotia with a focus on downtown revitalization, commercial development, tourism growth, enhanced communications and strong core services. The plan merges the pillars of commercial, environmental, tourism, heritage and social sustainability and growth for New Glasgow.

If you decide to visit New Glasgow in late summer, please join us at the Mayor's Tea in conjunction with our Festival of the Tartans celebrations. We would be delighted to introduce you to New Glasgow and welcome you to our community in person.

It is my great pleasure to serve and represent the citizens of New Glasgow.
