Project Description

Enter a short description of the work you are planning to do. This helps staff confirm that you selected the correct permit type.

Examples of what to include:

  • Renovations: What part of the building you are changing and what work is being done (for example: finishing a basement, replacing windows, renovating a kitchen).
  • Additions (including decks): Where the addition will be attached and what it will be used for (for example: adding a back deck, building a bedroom addition).
  • Change of Use: What the building is used for now and what it will be used for after the project (for example: changing a store into an apartment).
  • New Construction: What you are building and where it will be located on the property (for example: new single-family home, detached garage beside existing house).
  • Placing or Moving a Building (including mobile homes): Whether the building is new or being moved from another location. If it is being moved, include where it is coming from.
  • Projects without a building: Describe what is being installed (for example: sign, parking lot, telecommunications tower, wind turbine).
  • Swimming Pools: Indicate whether the pool is in-ground or above-ground and whether decking or fencing will be added.

You do not need to include measurements here if they are entered elsewhere in the application.

 

 Location

Next, enter the address where the work will take place.

  • Civic address is the civic address of the project site. There may not be one if there is no existing building on the site. When this is the case, please indicate so
  • You can type the address into the address box, or select your property directly from the map

Development Permit Application Types

New Construction: constructing a new building to confirm compliance with zoning and Land Use Bylaw requirements

Building Addition: increasing the size of an existing building

Place/Locate a Structure: placing or relocating an existing structure onto a property

Parking Lot Expansion: expanding or creating a parking area

Conversion or Change of Use: changing how a building is used (for example, changing the number of dwelling units)

Accessory Building: constructing a shed, garage, or pool house

Swimming Pool: installing an in-ground or above-ground swimming pool in accordance with the Swimming Pool Bylaw

Deck: constructing a deck

Sign: installing a ground sign, wall sign, or pylon sign

 

Building Permit Application Types

Demolition: removing or demolishing an existing building or structure

Renovation: making structural repairs or interior alterations

Addition: increasing the size of an existing building

Accessory Building (Residential): constructing sheds, garages, or pool houses

Deck: constructing or replacing a deck

Swimming Pool or Hot Tub: installing an above-ground or in-ground pool or hot tub

Place or Locate a Structure: placing a manufactured building or relocating an existing structure

Conversion or Change of Use: changing how a building is used, such as converting a dwelling into a business

New Construction: constructing a new residential, commercial, institutional, or industrial building

Occupancy Only: occupying an existing building or space without structural changes, typically following a change in tenancy or use

 

Residential, Commercial, or Industrial Projects

After selecting your permit application type, you will be asked to identify whether your project is residential, commercial, or industrial.

Residential: projects related to homes or living spaces, such as houses, apartments, garages, decks, sheds, fences, and home additions

Commercial: projects related to businesses that provide goods or services to the public, such as retail stores, offices, restaurants, salons, and service shops

Industrial: projects related to manufacturing, processing, storage, or large-scale operations, such as warehouses, fabrication shops, processing facilities, and distribution centres
