Welcoming the Lulan Home

New Glasgow, NS, August 12, 2025 - The Town of New Glasgow will proudly welcome home the historic horse-drawn steam engine fire truck, the Lulan, with a special ceremony and presentation at Station 33, New Glasgow Fire Department.

The Lulan, purchased by the Town of New Glasgow in 1877, has a storied history of service. Following two historic fires in the town, the Lulan became a vital part of the community’s firefighting efforts. In 1917, the Lulan was sent to Halifax to assist after the Halifax Explosion, accompanied by a full complement of firefighters, nurses, and doctors. Its final run was on July 23, 1918, before it was eventually returned to Halifax for restoration and display in 2018 as part of a shared history between New Glasgow and Nova Scotia’s capital city.

Named in honour of Pictou Landing First Nation Chief James Lulan, who lived to the age of 97, the Lulan is a treasured artifact of both New Glasgow’s heritage and Nova Scotia’s firefighting history.

“We are delighted to have the Lulan back in New Glasgow as part of our Town’s 150th anniversary celebrations,” says Mayor Nancy Dicks. “It is a rich part of our story and symbolic of the character, leadership and dedication of the people of New Glasgow and area to want to support and help others in a time of need. This community mindedness, caring and generosity still exists today. That the Lulan is named in recognition of a Mi’kmaq Chief from Pictou Landing First Nation, also gives it a place of great prominence and significant in our region’s and province’s history.”

“The Lulan is part of our history,” added New Glasgow Fire Chief Ross White. “It’s an honour to welcome it home."
