National Day of Mourning Ceremony to Be Held April 28 in Trenton

April 27, 2026, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia - The annual National Day of Mourning ceremony honouring workers who have been killed, injured, or made ill as a result of workplace incidents will be held Tuesday, April 28 at 6:00 p.m. at Trenton Steeltown Park.

Hosted by the Pictou County Injured Workers Association in partnership with the Town of New Glasgow and the Town of Trenton, the ceremony provides an opportunity for community members, employers, workers, and families to come together in remembrance and to reaffirm a shared commitment to safer workplaces.

Across Canada, more than 1,000 workers lose their lives each year due to workplace incidents. The Day of Mourning serves as a reminder of the ongoing importance of prevention and the responsibility shared by all to protect workers’ health and safety.

“April 28 is a time for us to pause as a community to remember those whose lives have been lost or forever changed because of workplace injuries,” said Larry Maloney of the Pictou County Injured Workers Association. “It is also a time to renew our commitment to ensuring safer workplaces for everyone.”

The ceremony will include the singing of O Canada, opening prayer, a moment of silence, remarks from local leaders, a guest address, and the laying of wreaths in honour of workers who have been lost.

“Each year, this ceremony reminds us that behind every workplace tragedy is a family, a workplace, and a community affected by loss,” said Mayor Nancy Dicks of the Town of New Glasgow. “We gather to remember those individuals and to reaffirm our shared responsibility to promote health and safety in every workplace.”

Members of the public are encouraged to attend and take part in this important community observance.
